THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION – IS HIRING A MAGICIAN EXPENSIVE?
It can be; depends whom you’re hiring. The field is full of expensive and cheap & cheerful magicians. Finding the right magician for the right fee for your occasion, can be another headache when organising your Wedding. As close up magicians are an “Add On” to an event, we can’t afford to be over expensive, as the Bride & Groom could decide that their Wedding can survive without a Magician
ARE YOU EXPENSIVE?
No, I don’t think I am, but what is expensive these days? Expensive to one client can be pretty cheap to another. I’ve many clients and they all say I’m pretty reasonable; otherwise they wouldn’t keep booking me. Nevertheless, it is the fee which determines your decision whether to book me. Personally, I would say my fees are sensible and pretty reasonable. Most importantly, I give excellent value with top quality magic, by hitting the best fee to hopefully suit your budget. No extra premium for making model balloons for the children, if required.
HOW FAR WILL YOU TRAVEL?
Anywhere, including Ireland/Northern Island. I’m based in Warrington, Cheshire, so 75% of my work is in the North West, but I’ve travelled further afield to perform my skills. I will work anywhere in the UK and in the World if need be.
I’VE NEVER BOOKED A MAGICIAN BEFORE, SO CAN YOU EXPLAIN HOW A MAGICIAN WORKS AT MY EVENT?
You’re not the first to think along these lines, and you won’t be the last: In a nutshell, a Wedding Magician is the “ICING ON THE CAKE”. Basically, it’s a nice touch to complete your occasion. Magicians are directed to your Guests. Without your guests, there will be no event, so it is important that your guests are amused, and close-up magic is the perfect way to achieve that.
HOW LONG DO YOU PERFORM FOR?
It is usually up to you;, it’s your event. To give you an idea, I perform as long as it takes for me to feel that job is done professionally. I don’t charge by the hour, for the simple reason I just don’t know how the day is going to pan out. Most Weddings I perform at don’t run on time. I therefore work through the duration OF the slot. Afternoon Packages – From the service to the speeches. Evening Reception – From the beginning of the evening up until the DJ kicks his music into gear.
ARE YOU ANY GOOD?
It is an answer you need to know, but don’t like asking. So to save you the embarrassment, I will try to alleviate the awkwardness. The only way I can answer this question is to tell you that I’ve been performing magic for almost 20 years. I’ve done over 3000 events up and down the country, Europe and even in some case the World. Through this; I’ve gain priceless experience to deliver top quality magic and the ability to deal with all types of clientele. I hope that has answered your sensitive question. Next question!
IS YOUR ACT CLEAN?
Yes, very clean. There will be no bad language and no blue material used in my act (the magic circle condemns it) – leave that kind of stuff to the comedians. I know my limits.
DOES YOUR ACT HAVE HUMOUR?
Yes, of course. Humour plays a big part in magic. My act is not false, white elephant, dry humour, where you feel you need to laugh, just to be polite. The secret of humour is timing. Therefore, I will use humour at the right time and in the correct context, when I feel it is needed during my act. Remember, you’ve hired a magician, not a comedian.
AM I BOOKING A RELIABLE MAGICIAN & SERVICE?
Very reliable. I’m proud to say that I’ve attended every event I’ve been booked for in the last 17 years. I do have a Sat-Nav (GPS) to help me to get to your venue, backed up with A to Z’s, but if any unfortunate circumstances arise that are out of my control, you will be notified asap, with attempts to get a replacement magician. My biggest hurdle when I go to a venue is the traffic; it is so unpredictable. I always allow extra time on my journey to allow for delays, if they occur – fingers cross crossed. It is a good idea to leave me a mobile contact number, just in case I get stuck or if I’m struggling to find you. I’ve come across a few out-of-sight venues in my time, where I had to call for that final guidance.
WHAT KIND OF MAGIC DO YOU DO?
The close-up Magic you see on TV, (performed by Dynamo & David Blaine) is more or less what I do, except I won’t be walking on any rivers or walking up buildings (that’s more for TV than for private occasions). Magic has moved to another level from the Old School “Pick a card and find it”. I will be performing the OMG kind of magic, where things disappear in front of you and end up in your handbag or wallet. HOW? I perform amazing, close-up illusions, classic card magic, coin magic, rope magic and even some spooky mental magic. My material suits my character & personality. No one will be forced to be involved in my act.
ARE YOU IN THE MAGIC CIRCLE?
Yes, I’ve been a member of the Bolton Magic Circle for 19 years and the Manchester Circle of Magicians for 6 years. I’m currently the President of the Bolton Magic Circle.
FOR HOW MANY YEARS HAVE YOU DONE MAGIC?
A long time. Around 20 years all together. Turned full time in 2003.
MY EVENT WILL HAVE CHILDREN PRESENT, CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE?
Yes, no problem. Although my magic is effective to suit adults, I can tame down some material to accommodate for the kids, and they love it. As for the tiny tots; the under 4’s – I usually make them a model balloon. For example, a sword balloon for the little boys and a doggy on a lead for the little girls. It is very important to have an adult present, whilst I’m performing magic for children.
ARE YOU CRB CHECKED?
I had a feeling you were going to ask that question next! – Yes
DO I NEED TO PROVIDE ANY EQUIPMENT?
No, leave it with me. You have enough to organise than to worry about what the magician requires.
DO I NEED TO FEED YOU?
Hmmmm. You don’t need to feed the magician. If it’s an afternoon event, I often bring some sandwiches. When there is a buffet, sometimes the client will say help yourself. If it’s a sit down meal where you have paid good money for each guest, to add another meal to your bill to feed the magician can be expensive, therefore I always decline. Besides, if it a sit down meal, Im often working the tables anyway. Depending on the hotel, sometimes the head room manager often offers me and the photographer a plate.
IS THERE ANY HIDDEN CHARGES?
No No, the quote I give you is the fee on the day or night. Regarding Weddings…I’m quite aware that other Wedding Accessories are higher because it is a Wedding – I don’t charge a Wedding Premium for the simple reason that Magicians at Weddings are “Add On’s”
COULD BE INTERESTED – HOW FAR IN ADVANCE DO I NEED TO BOOK YOU?
Booking any entertainer is a lottery; it all depends on availability of your date. I have known to be booked the day after the enquiry, there again you can enquire about a date in 3 years in advance and I can be booked up. If you need to book a magician on Prime Days/Nights such as Friday & Saturdays or at Christmas, it is advise to book in 2 to 3 months in advance, there again you may hit lucky and squeeze in at the last minute.
I’M EXPECTING A LOT OF GUESTS AT MY EVENT- CAN YOU ACCOMMODATE?
Yes, but how many? To give you an idea, I can accommodate 15 tables max, that is say 150 guests (give or take) Any more, you’re going to dilute the Magician. If you do have more than 200 guests, I would suggest having a second magician. Don’t worry, I do know quite a few magicians I work with well and as a team. But if you’re just having the one magician and you do have between 150 to 200 Guests, I’m not going to get round to amaze everyone — I would say I will get through 85% of your guests. I may be a magician, but I can’t fly like Superman.
DO I NEED PAY A DEPOSIT?
Sore subject – Depends – I know some clients resent paying deposit for some reason and in some respect, I can relate. So I like to make life easy by saying no. If I need to travel great distance to get to your event or your event is big, I usually ask for a deposit to cover me. I will discuss all that when you become to book me. Next question.
CAN I CALL YOU FOR MORE INFO?
Can I call you for more info? Of course you can. Please don’t think calling me is booking me. More you know how a magician works at your Wedding, the better for you. I will never say to you “Do you want to book me”, I always wait for my client to say “I would like to book you” – the rest is painless.
Ok, I’m interested; I may want to book you, but how do I go about it?
DON’T WORRY, BOOKING ME IS PAINLESS. First of all, you need to be 100% happy with what I can offer you for your Wedding before booking me. I don’t want you to be thinking after you’ve booked me “Oh my God, what have I done” I want you to feel at ease knowing you’ve made a right decision booking me. OK…all you need to do is leave me a contact number. I will call you and I will go through everything with you. OR you can call me on 01925 456443 or 07906 326377. Sometimes it is nice to have that person touch with that little phone call. From then onwards, the booking process is easy.
